There are also two applications (Desktop Earth 2 for PC users & OSXplanet 1.0.1 for Mac users) that will set these images real time as desktop wallpaper. (link via die.net)
Watch the sun rise and set all over the world on this real-time, computer-generated illustration of the earth's patterns of sunlight and darkness. The clouds are updated every 3 hours with current weather satellite imagery.

Pictured above is Pop (my grandfather and your great grandfather) & Navy warrant officer (machinist), Michael Kuzmak, who served aboard the USS Goldsborough DDG-20, SC-505, & USS Romulus ARL-22 during WWII. While I'm not a very patriotic person at heart, the following poem did strike a chord.

See also, Kuzmak Home Movies (Part1), Kuzmak Home Movies (Part2), Pop's WWII Medals, Pop, and Pop (Reprise).
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the courts
who has given us the right to keep and bear arms

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN, who salutes the Flag,
and serves under the flag.

Thank God for the VETERAN.

I thought pot was a Gateway drug? Link via Engadget...
Oh, how the mighty have fallen: Ben Curtis, famous just a few years ago as "Steven the Dell Dude," is now a waiter / bartender at Tortilla Flats in New York. Although the Steven ads were hugely popular and generated tons of buzz (and revenue) for Dell, the company eventually dropped the campaign after Ben got arrested for buying pot in 2003 -- shocking no one who actually watched the commercials, but apparently not the message Dell wanted to send the parents fronting the cash for all those machines.

Terry (while lamenting the whisk) caught this on the Nature Channel last night. No doubt, if she had a blog, this would definitely be on it. Unfortunately, the clip I found of it on YouTube leaves out the best part—the prey he is pouncing on (a mouse in this case) is three feet below the surface!

Stunt dating. You heard it here first.

Now entering my sophomore season as a parent, I'm really beginning to appreciate the rewards of being a one (yes, there is life after children). Today, Fiona and I spent a couple hours at the park, and I have to say, it was the best two hours of my day. I think I had just as much fun chasing her around as she did going down the two story winding slide. This got me thinking (I'll keep it brief).

A few months into Theresa's pregnancy, we started a journal for Fiona. The idea was simple: begin documenting our new lives together so that someday, she could have something to remind her of where she came from. I started out strong, but I have to confess, Theresa has definitely picked up the slack since her birth. If your following along, that was two years ago...

Sooooo, I decided to create a tag "For Fiona" because I think it's my best shot at contributing to the journal at a somewhat respectable level. Let's face it, I probably spend more time on the computer than I should and the internet gives me a unique opportunity to share these moments using a medium that has become my profession.

Fiona, thanks for making me smile today. This one's for you...

Uncle Craig (of Block Island Seafood Company) and Aunt Moisey pose with "Lobzilla" during a recent trip the Vineyard. Shortly after the photo was taken, Craig tells me the 100 year old crustacean was purchased by Gene Simmons' body guard...
Here's a real life creature of the deep...A 24 lb. lobster that's around 100 years old. He was caught off Martha's Vineyard in the Fall of 2007.

Holy shnikies!
There are few mountain tourist trails as dangerous as the above pictured route on Mt. Hua in China’s Shaanxi Province. Not only does much of the trail consist of narrow footpaths and extremely steep staircases, but there are also a few sections where hikers must scale across cliffs on a rusty chain and some foot-sized holes chiseled in the rock. There’s even a place where one must descend a 20 meter chain to reach the continuation of the trail!
